The face-versus-fingerprint debate usually starts with hygiene and ends with payroll. Both technologies are mature; what differs is the environment each suits. Fingerprint readers are inexpensive, work in bright daylight where cameras struggle, and give strong identity assurance — but they need reasonably clean, dry, uncut fingers. That makes them excellent in offices, clinics and controlled indoor areas, and poor choices on construction sites, kitchens, chemical plants and anywhere workers handle oil, cement or dough.
Face recognition inverts those trade-offs. Nothing is touched, so there is no shared surface and no queue at a single reader, and the terminal keeps reading through spectacles, masks and changing hairstyles when it is properly configured. The costs are a higher device price, more sensitivity to camera placement and lighting, and the need for liveness detection to stop photo-based spoofing, which any serious vendor includes. In dusty or outdoor gates, face terminals often survive where fingerprint sensors would need constant cleaning.
The sensible answer for most organisations is neither/or. Use face recognition where hygiene, speed or dirty hands matter — factory gates, hospitals, kitchens, site entrances — and fingerprint or card readers where cost matters more and conditions are clean. Both can report into the same attendance software with the same shift and payroll rules, so the mixed deployment costs nothing extra in administration, and you can add terminals later without changing systems.
